Why This Question Matters

Pregnancy can be both joyful and emotionally challenging. Many women worry about whether continuing or starting antidepressants could harm their baby. The reality is that both untreated depression and medication use carry risks — the key is balancing them with professional support.

Risks of Untreated Depression

Stopping antidepressants suddenly can lead to relapse. A landmark study by Cohen et al. (2006) found relapse rates of 60–70% in women who discontinued their medication during pregnancy. Untreated depression is linked to:

• Poor sleep and nutrition

• Increased substance use

• Preterm birth and low birth weight

• Higher risk of postpartum depression

• Difficulty bonding with your baby

Are Antidepressants Safe in Pregnancy?

The most commonly used medications are SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

• Large studies show they are generally safe.

• Small risks exist, such as neonatal adaptation syndrome (usually mild and temporary).

• Rare associations with a condition called pulmonary hypertension of the newborn and case reports of congenital anomalies have been reported, but the absolute risks remain low.

How Decisions Are Made

Every woman’s situation is unique. Decisions depend on:

• History of depression or anxiety

• What medications you’ve responded to before

• Severity of current symptoms

• Support systems in place and personal preferences

A perinatal psychiatrist can weigh risks and benefits for your individual case.

Non-Medication Options

For some women, therapy and lifestyle strategies may be effective on their own, or alongside medication:

• Psychological therapies such as CBT or IPT

• Mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques

• Exercise, sleep hygiene, and nutrition

• Support groups or peer networks
