Dr Louise Garcia-Rodriguez

Psychiatrist – Women’s, Perinatal & Reproductive Mental Health

Dr Louise Garcia-Rodriguez is a Consultant Psychiatrist who specialises in women's mental health, particularly across the reproductive life cycle—from preconception and fertility, through pregnancy, postpartum, and into perimenopause. She has a special interest in hormone-sensitive conditions such as PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), and her clinical approach is rooted in compassion, clinical rigour, and a keen understanding of the hormonal, psychological, and social dimensions that shape women’s mental health.

In addition to her private practice, Dr Garcia-Rodriguez serves as a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Statewide Women’s Mental Health Service at The Alfred Hospital, providing specialist care in one of Victoria’s key public settings.

She supports women experiencing a broad spectrum of psychiatric concerns, including anxiety, depression, PMDD, perinatal mood and psychotic disorders, PTSD and complex trauma, bipolar disorder, OCD, and more. Her approach is trauma-informed and culturally sensitive, integrating the latest evidence-based treatments with careful consideration of hormonal, spiritual, and lifestyle influences.

An active contributor to psychiatric education and research, Dr Garcia-Rodriguez holds an honorary lecturer position with the University of Melbourne and remains engaged in academic work. Her dual role as clinician and educator reflects her belief that some of the most valuable insights come not only from research—but from listening to the women she works with.

Outside of her professional work, she enjoys learning French and spending time with her family.

Please note: Dr Garcia-Rodriguez focuses exclusively on therapeutic care and does not provide medico-legal reports or third-party assessments (e.g., for insurers, employers, or legal purposes).

Training and Credentials

Dr Garcia-Rodriguez holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Manchester (UK) and a Master of Psychiatry from the University of Melbourne. She also completed a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. Her specialist training took place across leading institutions including the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and the Royal Women’s Hospital, where she also later worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and a member of the Section of Perinatal and Infant Psychiatry.
